NPP calls the election; Nana Akufo-Addo 51.3%; Mahama 45%

The opposition New Patriotic Party is asking its supporters to get ready for a massive jubilation Sunday after calling the election in its favour.

The General Secretary of the party, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie at a press conference in Accra-the third of such conferences on Saturday said its flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo has secured a first round victory with 51.3 per cent of total votes cast.

He said the incumbent president polled a little over 45 per cent of the total votes cast.

“We know the results; we know Nana Addo will be the president. Go there (EC) in white no mourning cloth and jubilate,” he said.

He said given the results they have collated from the various polling stations and constituencies it is highly impossible for the president to win.

He charged the EC to be fair and not to succumb to pressures from the ruling government.

Whilst the party accepts that constitutional power is vested in the EC to declare results, he was quick to add the party is only calling the results of the election it had collated so far.

He expressed gratitude to the media and the voters who despite, all the challenges associated with the verification machines were still patient and eager to vote.

He said the NPP is a party that respects the rule of law and would not do anything to jeorpardise the future of the country.

The Deputy Youth and Sports Minister, Dr Omane Boamah said the actions by the NPP is “reckless” to say the least.

He said today is exactly eight years since the NPP usurped the powers of the EC by declaring itself winners of the 2004 election.

Accusing the NPP of setting the stage to create chaos in the country, the Minister said the government will not countenance such irresponsible acts by the NPP.
